When I turned 40, I did an art foundation – my creative birthday present to me! Having previously tried my hand at ceramics, stone carving and painting, I wanted to explore my creative side in more depth and 40 felt like the perfect moment - and that’s when I fell in love with painting.
I am an abstract painter with a love of colour which has been heavily influenced by my travels, particularly India, Nepal, SE Asia and West Africa where colour really comes alive. I started to think about our emotional response to colour and how that impacts on us and this is reflected in my work. I am interested in people, relationships and emotion – the external world, but also what lies beneath the surface - the parts of our story that remain untold, in journeys both real and imagined. I use various techniques which layer, obscure and reveal to create texture and interest, to reflect these ideas.
I continue to experiment with non-traditional application of paint – hands, household objects, found objects, paper, cardboard, fabric – to create interesting textures and unusual effects. By spontaneously applying colour it gives an intuitive feel to my paintings allowing total freedom of expression. I use acrylic paints as their quick-drying nature aids this impulsive method of painting, allowing layers to be added in quick succession.
